Using a tell-show-try model, we will review MI skills and concepts, demonstrate the use of the skill in motivational interviewing practice and provide opportunities for practice and feedback. The first half of the class will be spent on relational components of MI (the MI spirit, accurate empathy, and OARS) and the second half on technical components of MI (cultivating change talk and softening sustain talk).

Alicia Shiver is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and a co-owner of the MI Training Center. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in California and New Mexico and an Associate Director of Behavioral Health at a federally qualified health center . She has experience training and coaching helpers from backgrounds in public health, medicine, education, behavioral health, addictions, criminal justice, social services, public safety, and child welfare. Her professional interests include motivational interviewing, public health, harm reduction, housing justice, neurodiversity, and community-based participatory research.
