18-Hour Online Training | 18 APA-Approved CEs


Enhance your Motivational Interviewing (MI) coaching and evaluation skills through an in-depth Motivational Interviewing Standardized Patient (MISP) Workshop Series, led by experienced MINT trainers Katie Hartlieb, PhD, RD and Verna Burden, MS, RD.

This 18-hour interactive workshop is designed for MI trainers and supervisors who want to strengthen their ability to coach, assess, and provide objective feedback on MI skillfulness using standardized patient interviews. Participants will gain practical tools to design and implement a customized MISP protocol tailored to their own work setting.

The training includes 15 hours of live, instructor-led sessions and 3 hours of asynchronous learning over 6 weekly sessions.

What You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • How to design a robust standardized patient role that will fit your work setting

  • The purpose of using MI learning element pitches when coaching and evaluating MI skillfulness

  • The process for selecting and developing multiple learning elements to create a complete

  • MISP protocol

  • How to navigate the simultaneous roles of standardized patient and evaluator needed to provide objective feedback


Workshop Activities

Through the workshop, participants will:

  • Identify specific MI skills that need improvement or evaluation in your work setting

  • Develop a complete MISP protocol for your coaching and evaluation needs

  • Practice conducting an interview with your MISP protocol

  • Capture learner strengths and growth areas during a MISP interview

  • Discuss scenarios and strategies with other participants and experienced MISP providers


Target Audience

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Motivational Interviewing trainers and supervisors

  • Professionals responsible for MI coaching, feedback, or evaluation

solid foundational understanding of Motivational Interviewing is required. MI coding experience is optional but helpful.


Workshop Format & Schedule

  • Live online sessions via Zoom with Katie and Verna

  • 6 weekly sessions (2.5 hours each) for a total of 15 hours

  • 3 hours of asynchronous work, focused on refining your individualized MISP protocol

  • Expect approximately 30 minutes of self-paced work per week


Continuing Education

  • 18 Continuing Education (CE) credits

  • Accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA)

Instructors

Katie Hartlieb, PhD, RD

Professor and Program Director of Functional Nutrition at Parker University (Dallas, TX) and a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2009. Dr. Hartlieb specializes in MI coding, coaching, and strengthening the standardized patient experience internationally.

Verna Burden, MS, RD

MINT member since 2006, MI trainer, coach, and standardized patient, and adjunct faculty in the MSW program at Portland State University. Verna brings extensive experience supporting organizations through MI training and evaluation.

Both instructors have served as standardized patients for MINT Training of New Trainers (TNT) events since 2020 and have supported the development of both English and non-English speaking standardized patients within the MINT community.
