About the Event

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person's own commitment to change (Miller & Rollnick, 2013). MI is an evidenced-based treatment and has been translated into over 50 languages. Providers who are trained in MI learn how to effectively engage and communicate with others to increase a person's motivation and commitment to change or enter into treatment.

MI was developed by William R. Miller, Ph.D. and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. in the 1980's.  This approach is heavily rooted in Carl Roger's humanistic approach but differs in a significant way: it is focused and goal oriented. There are over 1300 published clinical trials in Motivational Interviewing that support the use of MI in various settings like; healthcare (primary care, emergency, dialysis, etc), addicitons, mental health, corrections, and education.

The trainers, Lindsay Worth and Alicia Shiver are co-owners of MITC and members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. They directly work with and learn from William Miller, PhD in their training and research program in Albuquerque, NM. This opportunity, along with years of MI teaching experience, have supported Alicia and Lindsay in training others in Motivational Interviewing and other evidenced-based practices.
