About the Event

William R. Miller, Ph.D.

Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry

The University of New Mexico

Treating substance use disorders (SUDs) should be part of the training of all mainstream medical and behavioral health care providers.  In this 2-hour webinar I hope to convey some of the most important, interesting, and unexpected things I have learned in 48 years of addiction research and treatment.  What works in treating SUDs?  Is there one superior approach?  Is more treatment better?  Is addiction an incurable disease?  How can we help concerned family members?  What about motivation for change, relapse, denial, waiting lists, intake, manual-guided treatment, moderation, and matching clients to the best treatment?  If I were designing a SUD treatment system now, what would it be?  Using scientific method, these are the kinds of questions I have been asking for five decades, and the answers may surprise you.
